The Gasworks has always been an integral piece of Adelaide’s history, helping a town evolve into the city it’s become.

The South Australian Gas Company established the Brompton Gasworks at a former mid-19th century brickworks site, marking the beginning of gas production and supply for Adelaide’s homes and businesses—a service that would last for nearly 150 years.

In May 1863 the first fires were lit, marking a new dawn for Adelaide. To adapt the site for its new purpose several small buildings were constructed, including a retort house, purifying house, chimney, plus the iconic Chief Street wall, which still stand to this day.

The future vision for The Gasworks will enable the adaptive reuse, restoration and integration of the existing heritage structures, seamlessly blending history, open space, sustainability and community.

At the beating heart of the new community, lies the Heritage Precinct. The site’s historic buildings will be thoughtfully reimagined, preserving their character while creating spaces made for people to meet and connect.

Within these restored walls, new restaurants, cafés and fresh food retailers will bring fresh life to a place built on history, ensuring its significance is felt and celebrated for generations to come.

A broad mix of open spaces will bring The Gasworks to life, from leafy parks and pocket gardens to spaces designed to relax and connect.

Green spaces will flow seamlessly, connecting with the surrounding neighbourhood and creating a network of beautifully landscaped places to spend time in, every day.
